'One cap to go': Record-chasing Van Wyk wants to bow out knowing Banyana are Wafcon-bound

The forthcoming match is not just a numerical pursuit for Janine van Wyk, but also the opportunity to bow out with Banyana Banyana booking their spot for the CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco next year.

The 1-1 draw in the first leg of the second and last round of qualifiers against Burkina Faso on Thursday not only secured Banyana a crucial away goal, but also marked a historic moment for Van Wyk.

She equalled the record for the most international caps as a captain, a milestone now shared with Ahmed Hassan of Egypt, further solidifying her legacy in women's football before she calls time on her international career.

"I'm very happy that the coaching staff has given me this opportunity to step onto the field and very grateful for my teammates supporting me. It's 184 caps [and] one cap to go," Van Wyk, 36, said.

"It's unfortunate that we didn't get the result that we came here for, but we have one leg to go, which I'm sure will be a positive one."

Van Wyk was a key player in Banyana's African title win last year and acknowledges that, despite the advantage of an away goal, there is still significant work to be done to enhance South Africa’s chances in the upcoming match in Pretoria on Monday.

"It's good that we scored a goal and unfortunate that we conceded one," Van Wyk said.
