Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir donates kit to delighted East Kilbride Athletic Club kids
Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir has donated a host of her kit to delighted youngsters at East Kilbride Athletic Club.
The international track star has a close bond with the club, having visited down the years, and has been keen to maintain a strong link with athletes at grassroots level.
Muir approached club president Gordon Colvin at the recent West District Cross Country Relay Championships to inform him she a variety of kit from her Great Britain and Scotland outings, as well as gear from her sponsors Nike.
And she was very keen to pass them on to the next generation of runners aiming to follow in her footsteps.
Muir, who won silver in the 1500m at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and is a two-time European champion, chose East Kilbride AC, Garscube Harriers and Shettleston Harriers as the three clubs to benefit.
There were approximately 80 pieces of kit distributed to EKAC and the club conducted a raffle amongst their under-11 to under-20 members to determine who got their hands on the sought-after kit.
Gordon Colvin said: “East Kilbride AC athletes were the lucky recipients of two large bags full of excess athletics kit donated by Scottish International Athlete Laura Muir.
“The club handed out the kit to the winners, randomly drawn from a complete list of EKAC athletes from U11 up to U20.
“The kit was distributed as widely as possible to around 80 young athletes, who were absolutely delighted with Laura’s gifts.
“Many of the items will get well-used, some will be kept as special souvenirs, but all will be treasured, so thank you Laura Muir.
“It is such a great example of Scotland’s elite athletes keeping in touch with the grassroots of our sport.”
