Ollie Cahill backs St Pat's Darragh Burns to play his way into Ireland U21s contention

St Patrick's Athletic were under a degree of pressure on Friday as Shamrock Rovers came to Richmond Park.

Two defeats on the bounce to Bohemians and Sligo Rovers had dented some of the early confidence built under Tim Clancy.

But the Saints rose to the occasion against the champions to record a 1-0 victory via a Chris Forrester header (you can watch that goal on the podcast below).

One player who caught the eye and was specifically name-checked by manager Clancy when he spoke to RTÉ soccer correspondent Tony O'Donoghue after the game was 19-year-old winger Darragh Burns whose stock continues to rise.

The Pat's boss suggested it was "going to be a really big season" for the youngster and with Republic of Ireland senior manager Stephen Kenny watching on, Clancy added that if he can maintain his form an Under-21 call could beckon "soon".

Burns' form has certainly caught the eye of another former winger in the shape of Ollie Cahill who was on the RTÉ Soccer Podcast alongside his ex-Drogheda United team-mate Graham Gartland and gave his take on the teenager's potential to push his way into the international scene.

"I'd be excited by him. Darragh is really coming into his own," said Cahill.

"(He scored) a cracking goal on the first night of the season against Shels. Tim alluded to it there about a couple of disappointing performances (against Bohs and Sligo) but I thought he was good the other night without being brilliant.
