Okoro canvasses more govt, corporate support for sports

M.I Okoro Badminton

Organisers of the just-concluded M.I Okoro and Associates American Badminton Championship, Meckson Okoro, has called on corporate organisations and government at all levels to invest more on sports to create avenues for Nigerian youths to build their skills and earn a living from such talents.

Speaking at the championship, which ended at Ikoyi Club 1938 Badminton Section, at the weekend, Okoro said his real estate company decided to sponsor the event to help the development of the sport.

He noted that badminton, as a sport, could produce more stars for the country, if a well-tailored plan is put in place to train players.

“My organisation has been sponsoring sports competitions as part of our corporate social responsibility, because it is important for sports to be given more priority in the country to help reduce youth restiveness and also provide jobs for them,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Chairman, Ikoyi Club Badminton Section, Adeoye Thomas, thanked the organisers of the championship, saying that the section, over the years, has churned out talents that have represented the country at international events.

“The idea of the American Badminton Championship is to make our members play the American style of badminton. The system is a process where top players in every group must challenge other players in the other groups to decide champions.

“It is a great pleasure for the club as MI Okoro sponsored the championship, which brought together our members to compete favourably against each other in a competitive situation. A friendly atmosphere was created among members during the championship,” he said.
