Ogun ‘hunts’ for festival cyclists to Santa Claus championship

Hosts of the 2025 National Sports Festival, Ogun State, have started the search for talented cyclists to aid their quest for the top position at the competition, which features the country’s best athletes in concentrated battles across different sporting events.

A member of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) board, Femi Thomas, told The Guardian that the hosts decided to beam their searchlight on the recent Santa Claus Ride High Competition in search of prospective medallists to represent the state at sports festival.

Thomas, who doubles as chairman of FT Cycle Care Cycling Club and Ogun State Cycling Association, said that the yearly tournament, which debuted in 2023, also served as an endurance and fun ride for both professional and amateur cyclists in the country.

The event, which held at Bourdillon, Ikoyi, Lagos, featured over 50 male and female cyclists in the 24-hour ride. Also speaking on the festival, Ogun State Cycling Association Coach, Kamoli Amoo, said the ride, which serves as preparation and selection process for his cyclists ahead of the festival, yielded positive results.

The 624-kilometre ride featured top Nigerian cyclists in a competition organised by FT Cycle Care to celebrate its 10th anniversary and also kick off the Tour d’Afrique sponsorship campaign, which will involve cyclists riding from Nigeria to Accra, Ghana, and back to Nigeria in March. At the end of the competition, awards were given to outstanding cyclists in different categories.
