NWSL bins the draft, improves player wages and terms

The National Women's Soccer League and the NWSL Players Association have agreed to a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that will eliminate the draft, guarantee contracts and grant unrestricted free agency to all players.

The deal runs through the 2030 season and already has been ratified by the players. It replaces the previous CBA that was set to expire in 2026.

The terms of the CBA, announced Thursday, also call for increased pay, the addition of some charter flights, and upgraded medical care and family leave.

"Given our vision to be the best league in the world, we determined that this was the right time to align with global standards and achieve long term labour peace. This CBA gives us agency over our business and gives the players agency over their careers," NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said in a press release.

"Our new agreement revolutionises the game, raises standards, and innovates the business."

Three Republic of Ireland internationals are currently playing in the NWSL: Denise O'Sullivan (North Carolina Courage), Kyra Carusa (San Diego Wave) and Marissa Sheva (Portland Thorn).

The NWSL becomes the first pro sports league in the United States to eliminate all drafts, including the college draft and expansion draft.

"The draft is an antiquated model that empowers teams to decide for players instead of players deciding for themselves," NWSLPA president Tori Huster said.

"Now, players can choose the team environment that fits their needs and maximises their opportunities. Teams will need to step up tocreate environments that appeal to players."
