NSW's Kerr misses out on debut Shield ton

Rookie allrounder Hayden Kerr has narrowly missed out on a maiden first-class century on a rain-hit day two of NSW's Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at the SCG.

After batting for four hours to rescue the Blues' innings on Friday, Kerr contributed just one upon resumption to be dismissed for 88.

NSW added just four runs to their overnight 8-272, lasting just 2.5 overs as Jackson Bird struck in quick succession to close the innings.

Tasmania limped their way to 2-20 with their innings hit by two rain delays.

NSW paceman Chris Tremain (2-9) was on a hat-trick in the fourth over of the innings but Caleb Jewell (9no) and Mac Wright (7no) have since steadied the ship.

Tremain had Tim Ward caught by wicketkeeper Peter Nevill for four, and the pair repeated the feat a ball later as Eamonn Vines fell for a golden duck on his Tasmania debut.

Earlier, Bird (3-38) put paid to any NSW batting resistance.

The former NSW quick clean bowled Kerr to end a 129-ball knock with the 25-year-old top-scoring in his third Shield match.
