Novak Djokovic admits ‘selfish’ decision was a ‘mistake’ that not all people will forgive him for

Novak Djokovic says his decision to attend an interview while knowing he had tested positive for coronavirus was ‘selfish’ and he understands if people cannot forgive him.

The world No.1 has recently opened up about his decision not to get vaccinated that ultimately meant he was deported from Australia last month and denied the chance to defend his Australian Open title.

One controversial aspect to come out from the entire saga saw his movements from when he tested positive on December 16 in Belgrade come under scrutiny.

Just two days later he did an interview with French publication L’Equipe where he posed for photos without a mask despite knowing he was positive.

When asked about the interview, the 34-year-old said: ‘It was a mistake.

‘I respect the journalist Franck (Ramella) who did the interview, he is in tennis longer than I am.

‘We delayed that interview for some time and I found out that I was positive after he already landed in Belgrade.

‘I had my mask on throughout the whole interview, kept physical distance. I did take my mask off for the photoshoot, but both Franck and the photographer were a few metres away from me.

‘I admit that it was selfish what I’ve done, it was a mistake that I own. I understand that not all people will forgive me and I understand the critics.’

In an interview with the BBC, Djokovic insisted he is not anti-vax but will continue to refuse vaccination even if it means missing future tennis tournaments.
