Nottingham Forest’s post-promotion plans for Man United loanee revealed

Nottingham Forest would explore the possibilities of trying to sign James Garner permanently if they’re promoted to the Premier League this season, according to a report from The Athletic.

Garner has excelled while on loan at Forest over the past 18 months and has been vital to their rise from relegation battlers to play-off hopefuls under Steve Cooper this term.

United’s technical director Darren Fletcher has already confirmed that the 21-year-old, alongside the club’s other Championship loanees, will be part of the first team squad for pre-season.

The Athletic has reported that Garner’s ambition is to be part of the Red Devils midfield moving forward but it seems Forest could make a play for him if they win promotion to the top flight.

It is understood that the City Ground outfit would explore the possibilities of trying to sign Garner permanently if they’re a Premier League in 2022/23.

Prizing him away from United may not be easy, however, particularly as his current contract runs until 2024.

The Verdict

Garner has proven a fantastic addition over the past 18 months and landing him permanently would be a phenomenal bit of business, though it’s hard to see United letting him leave.

Given the overhaul that’s likely to come in the Premier League club’s midfield, it would be a surprise not to see the 21-year-old get a go in the senior side next season.

Even so, you have to credit the Reds for their ambition and it’s exactly the sort of approach they should be taking if they do win promotion – as long as they’re lining up some more realistic targets as well.

You have to feel that promotion represents their only chance of extending Garner’s stay at the City Ground – whether that’s on another loan or a permanent deal.
