Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield, Blackburn and Luton in transfer hunt for 23-year-old defender

Former Manchester City defender Cameron Humphreys is attracting significant transfer attention ahead of the summer window from EFL clubs, according to the Daily Mail.

The 23-year-old departed the current Premier League champions in 2019 for Belgian side Zulte Waregem after managing to pick up just two senior appearances during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

After a loan spell at Dutch outfit Excelsior following his arrival at Waregem, Humphreys has been a regular since last season, featuring 52 times in the Jupiler Pro League and has helped play a part in five league clean sheets this season.

Humphreys’ three-year contract in Belgium though is set to expire this summer, and that has seen a host of Championship clubs show their interest.

Blackburn Rovers, Huddersfield, Luton Town and Nottingham Forest are all keen on bringing the centre-back back to British shores and giving Humphreys a second crack at English football.

Per the Daily Mail, Humphreys is said to be wanting a fresh challenge away from Belgium following the conclusion of the current campaign and he could be given that in his home nation.

The Verdict

Humphreys is one of many English youngsters who have branched out into Europe to find first-team football elsewhere having found their pathway blocked at top clubs in this country.

The experience in Belgium has clearly done him good as he’s been starting on a weekly basis for Waregem, and now he could potentially bring that experience back to England and rise up the footballing pyramid there.

He was clearly highly thought of at City to feature in their first-team briefly and there’s no reason why at the age of 23 he can’t develop into a Premier League defender still.
