Nottingham Forest agree £2 million transfer deal for Championship player

Nottingham Forest are on the verge of signing Stoke City striker Sam Surridge for a fee of £2 million, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy.

Forest have been in the market for a fresh face at the top end of the pitch very late in the day thanks to an injury suffered by Lewis Grabban against Cardiff City this past weekend.

And Steve Cooper has turned to a familiar face having managed Surridge at Swansea City during the 2019-20 season, where he spent the first half of it on loan scoring four times in 20 Championship outings.

Surridge only joined the Potters this past summer in deal believed to be in the region of £5.5 million, but he’s failed to impress at the Staffordshire side.

Having scored just twice for the club in the league, Surridge was set to join Cardiff City on a loan deal until the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

However at the last minute Forest have hijacked that switch and the 23-year-old will now head to the City Ground on a permanent basis – with Percy also reporting that a defender and winger addition are both wanted as well ahead of the 11pm deadline.

The Verdict

This could be a shrewd move from Cooper, who clearly knows what Surridge is about.

He may have only scored twice this season but sometimes it just doesn’t work out for a player at a particular club.

Surridge has a good pedigree and with Grabban potentially out for a while, Cooper needs someone he can trust and at the age of only 23, he still has time to improve.

On the face of it £2 million isn’t a steep fee and it still leaves potentially some money in the pot for further additions in other areas of the pitch.
