NOC describes 2023 as successful year for sports

NOC President, Habu Ahmed Gumel

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has described the outgoing 2023 as a successful year for sports development in the country.

Reflecting on sports in 2023 at a meeting to mark the end of its year programme, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Habu Gumel, said Nigeria’s performance in various sporting activities this year raised the country’s profile globally.

At the meeting, Gumel acknowledged NOC members’ contributions to the committee’s success, and also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his total support for sports development since assuming office.

He appealed to all stakeholders, including all federations presidents and the ministry of sports to work together to ensure the country’s strong participation in the three major games in 2024, which are the Youth Winter Games, the African Games and the Paris Olympic Games.

“We need a new result at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by improving on the 1996 Atlanta Games, where Nigeria won two gold medals.

“This was the Games the Chioma Ajunwa won gold through her 7.12-metre-long jump and the gold by our soccer ‘Dream Team’ led by Nwankwo Kanu,” he said.
Gumel also reflected on the activities of 2022, emphasising the committee’s commitment to unite the Olympic family and promote the ideals of the Olympic Movement.
