NLC strike stalls Super Eagles preparations for crucial World Cup qualifiers

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are continuing their preparations for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, even though the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress has prevented head coach Finidi George from having all invited players in camp.

Nigeria will take on South Africa on Friday, June 7, before heading out to Abidjan, in Cote d’Ivoire to take on Benin Republic three days later.

Fifteen players participated in a comprehensive training session on Monday morning at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium training pitch.

The two-hour session included fitness and shooting drills, as well as tactical training led by George.

However, eight key players—Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, and Paul Onuachu—have yet to join the squad.

Although these players are already in the country, they have been unable to arrive at the camp due to the ongoing NLC strike, which has stalled domestic flights.

There will be no training on Monday evening. Instead, the players will rest and undergo a recovery session.

Despite the disruptions, the team remains focused on their goal of securing victories in the upcoming qualifiers. The Super Eagles’ determination and rigorous training sessions reflect their commitment to achieving success on the international stage.
