Nike ends relationship with Mason Greenwood after Manchester United and England forward’s arrest
Nike have ended their relationship with Mason Greenwood after the Manchester United and England forward was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
Greenwood, 20, was arrested by Greater Manchester Police on January 30 and then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill two days later.
The England international was released on bail on Wednesday but Premier League club Manchester United have said he will not return to training or play in matches until further notice.
On the day of Greenwood’s first arrest, American sportswear company Nike said they were ‘deeply concerned’ by the allegations.
Greenwood has been sponsored by Nike since he made his Manchester United debut in 2019 but the company have now cut ties with the player.
A Nike spokesperson told The Athletic: ‘Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete’.
Greenwood, who has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United and made his international debut in 2020, was removed from video games FIFA, eFootball and PES this week.
Video game developer EA Sports said Greenwood had been removed from FIFA products and suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team packs and Ultimate Draft.
The Manchester United squad, meanwhile, is said to be ‘shocked’ and ‘appalled’ after Greenwood’s arrest.
