Niemann wins at Riviera as Scott cashes in

Chilean Joaquinn Niemann has survived a few final round nervous moments to become the first wire-to-wire winner of the PGA Tour event at Riviera Country Club in 53 years.

He then received winner's trophy from tournament host Tiger Woods after beating the best field in golf this year -- with the world's top 10 all in action.

The 23-year-old Chilean played his best golf in a 63-63 start and did just enough in the final round to win.

"It's the toughest tournament I think during the year," Niemann said.

"It's got the best field, the best players are here and that proves myself that I can be competing with the top guys... I think it's going to give me a lot of confidence for what is coming next."

Niemann carded a final round of even-par 71 to finish 19-under 265, two shots clear of world No.2 Collin Morikawa (65) and Cameron Young (70).

Australian Adam Scott -- who won the event at the famed Los Angeles layout in 2020 and was champion of the rain-affected 36-hole edition in 2005 -- had two eagles in a 5-under 66 to share fourth with world No.4 Viktor Hovland (70) at 14-under par.

Scott was buoyed by another fine showing at a course he has "good feelings" at and the 41-year-old said he was not too far off winning again.

"I've got a couple things I'd like to work on before I peg it up next time, but I'm pegging it up with a bit more confidence the next time I play...," he said after a pay day of $540,000 ($A750,000).

"I wouldn't change anything much, but just a little more practice and hopefully it keeps kind of embedding itself into my routines out there and I make a few more putts and a few less bad shots and hopefully be winning soon."
