Nick Kyrgios reveals locker room chat with Andy Murray about underarm serve

Nick Kyrgios has revealed he spoke with Andy Murray about underarm serving after the Brit was branded disrespectful for using the shot at Wimbledon 2022.

The 27-year-old regularly uses the underarm serve and was asked about Murray using the same tactic during his first-round win over his Australian compatriot James Duckworth.

Kyrgios, notorious for his bad-boy reputation and was making his own headlines with more on-court meltdowns on Tuesday, discussed the issue following his own first-round victory against Great Britain’s Paul Jubb.

‘I heard about it, apparently he won the point!’ Kyrgios said of Murray’s underarm serve, with the pair building up a strong friendship over their years on the ATP Tour.

‘I asked him about it in the locker room. He said it was pretty bad but he won the point. We have some fun chats in there, that’s for sure.

‘It’s just good to see him back competing. It’s his favourite tournament, he’s won it before. It’s just good to see him back.

‘He beat me in Stuttgart and he’s been playing some exceptional tennis.’

The underarm serve against Duckworth was only the second of Murray’s career and while it is considered by some to be controversial, the two-time Wimbledon champion insists that it is not underhand.

‘I personally have no issue with players using it. I never have,’ Murray said.
