The NFL have announced that Atlanta Falcons star Calvin Ridley has been banned from playing in the 2022 season for betting on the outcome of matches.
Wide receiver Ridley, 27, played his college football in Alabama before being drafted to the Falcons in 2018, and following his debut season was named in the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
In May last year, the franchise triggered the option to retain him for a fifth season, but having notched 31 receptions for 281 receiving yards - and two receiving touchdowns - in October he announced he was taking a break from the sport for mental health reasons.
However, it was later alleged that during his exile, Ridley used his mobile phone to place a series of bets on NFL games - including clashes involving the Falcons.
And following an investigation, the NFL announced on Monday that it had suspended Ridley until at least the conclusion of the 2022 campaign.
According to a report by nfl.com, Ridley placed the bets during a five-day period in late November.
