Newcastle United offer Dwight Gayle to Middlesbrough as they look to offload the striker

Newcastle United have offered Middlesbrough the chance to sign striker Dwight Gayle this summer as they look to offload the striker. With his family settled in the north east, it is understood that the move to Boro would appeal to the player too.

Chris Wilder is in need of reinforcements up top this summer after three loan strikers departed the club. The Boro boss has spoken about his optimism that he will get the quality players he craves, but admitted on Saturday after the win over Bishop Auckland that the market for strikers was a tough one right now.

But as reported by our sister site Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are looking to offload a number of players this summer as they plan their squad rebuild under Eddie Howe. Gayle is one of three players who have been told to train with the under-23s as the Magpies look to sort exits, along with former Boro targets Jeff Hendricks and Ciaran Clark. The Tyneside club have made Boro aware of Gayle's availability, with talks between the two parties about a potential deal.

Gayle has played three seasons in the Championship overall in his career, netting a total of 59 goals from his 100 games in the second tier. In his two most recent seasons in the Championship he netted over 20 goals, making him an attractive prospect. It is understood that he would be a player that would interest Wilder, but the finances of the deal would have to be viable. The 32-year-old is on a good wage on Tyneside and he would have to either take a pay cut or have Newcastle supplement his pay package in order for Boro to make a deal happen.
