Newcastle United news as Eddie Howe emphasises importance of substance over style in relegation battle

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has admitted there is a focus on results over performance as the Magpies look to secure safety in the Premier League. Howe's men are by no means the favourites to return to the Championship but are not yet mathematically safe and the 44-year-old has revealed that the time will come when his side can 'evolve.

He said: "It has put us in a stronger position but I still think we have work to do. The home games are key for us but we want to pick up points wherever we go. I think with the type of game it was it was easy for us to lose shape and discipline and commit too many forward. I think the discipline and responsibility we showed was really good.

"At this stage of the season, it is about results. We are well aware we need to continue to get points. I think it’s results over performances at the moment. There will be a time when we can evolve."

Newcastle United have learnt of new UEFA regulations which will influence the amount of money the club can spend based on income. New financial sustainability regulations were approved and clubs can now make losses of €60m over three years as opposed to €30m, but clubs will eventually only be able to spend 70% of their club revenue on wages, transfers and agent fees.

The Magpies will not be limited by the regulations instantly as they will be gradually implemented from June onwards but they will need to be in the mind of the club's decision-makers as Eddie Howe's squad is built. As well as limiting spending, they will provide an incentive for clubs to boost their revenue and Newcastle could benefit if they can secure the new sponsorship deals co-owner
