Newcastle United headlines amid Eddie Howe's new deal and James Maddison latest

Your Newcastle United headlines for Friday, August 5.

Eddie Howe has penned a new “long-term” contract to remain as Newcastle manager. Just nine months after his appointment, the former Bournemouth manager has extended his stay on Tyneside.

The Magpies enjoyed a stellar turnaround under Howe’s leadership last season, transforming from winless no-hopers to a comfortable mid-table outfit. With his initial deal set to expire in 2024, Toon chiefs have acted quickly to tie Howe down for the long haul.

Speaking about his extension, the 44-year-old said: "It's a great feeling to commit my future to this incredible club. I'm extremely proud to be the head coach of Newcastle United and have enjoyed every moment here.

“I'd like to take the opportunity to acknowledge my coaching team, the players, staff and supporters. They make it a very special place to be every day.”

Brendan Rodgers has admitted any decisions on his star player’s futures are out of his hands. Newcastle have had two attempts to sign James Maddison rejected in recent days as they look to test Leicester’s resolve.

So far, the Foxes have resisted but reported financial difficulties could force their hand. Rodgers is the only manager who has not signed a player this summer and he gave an unconvincing response when asked about Maddison.

“I hope not (whether Maddison or Fofana leave),” he said. “These players are not for sale. We need to move players out but it’s not getting rid of everyone and certainly not our best assets.

“It’s something the club are very strong on. James and Wesley are training very well and working hard for our game on Sunday. That’s (deciding who leaves) down to the club. For me, I concentrate on football.”
