Newcastle United fall down the Premier League table as three teams jump ahead of them

Newcastle United have dropped down to 13th in the Premier League after today’s results went against them.

Newcastle United started the weekend in the top half of the table in 10th spot. However, three teams leap-frogged the Magpies today, with Newcastle unable to respond until they play Manchester City tomorrow.

One of the teams climbing upwards was Crystal Palace, who are now a point ahead of Newcastle after beating Watford 1-0. The result sent Roy Hodgson’s side down into the Championship.

Aston Villa moved to equal points with Newcastle but ahead on goal difference after beating Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor. That left Burnley just two points ahead of Everton.

Brentford were the other team to jump ahead of Newcastle. They are on the same number of points too – 43 – but like Villa are ahead of Newcastle on goal difference after beating Southampton 3-0.

Newcastle travel to the Etihad tomorrow to take on the title-chasers Manchester City in a match which will be broadcast on Sky Sports. If Newcastle could get a draw they would move up to 11th, and if they can get an unexpected win they move back up to 10th.

However, Leicester City play at home to relegation-threatened Everton tomorrow. If they beat Everton or get a draw and Newcastle lose to Manchester City, then Leicester will also move ahead of the Magpies, bumping Newcastle down to 14th place in the table by the end of the weekend.

The next opportunity for Newcastle to get some points and climb back up the table after the City match will be against Arsenal at home on 16 May. Then their final potential points will be away to Burnley on 22 May.
