Newcastle transfer news: 'Only one winner' in race with Spurs over £46m beast

Newcastle United will win the battle for Lille defender Sven Botman in the summer if it comes down to money, says transfer insider Pete O’Rourke.

Tottenham are the latest club to be linked with the 22-year-old, but O’Rourke cannot see them paying a larger transfer fee or higher wages than their Premier League rivals.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham are considering making a move for Botman in the summer in a bid to improve their backline.

The Dutch youngster was a target for Newcastle in the last transfer window, with the same report stating that Lille demanded a £46m fee.

It obviously proved to be too much for the Tyneside club, who later went on to sign Dan Burn from Brighton in a £13m deal instead.

Given their new-found wealth, though, you probably cannot rule out Newcastle returning in the summer, while Lille may also decide to lower their asking price given that it will not be the middle of the season and they will have more time to replace him.

Botman clearly has his suitors in England, but for O’Rourke, there is only one winner if it comes down to a straight shoot-out between Newcastle and Tottenham.

The football journalist told GIVEMESPORT: “If it came down between Spurs and Newcastle over fee and wages, I think there’s only one winner, and that’ll be Newcastle.”

Tottenham are likely to have European football to offer, while Newcastle might not even be in the Premier League next season. If they are, however, it would not be a complete shock to see them beat Spurs to his signature.

The Magpies have already signed Bruno Guimaraes, who was thought to have been of interest to Arsenal last month, with the Brazilian recently talking up the club’s project.
