Newcastle reignite interest in major January target as Eddie Howe looks to upgrade pivotal position

Newcastle are reportedly ready to reignite their interest in Sevilla defender Diego Carlos this summer after failing to land him in the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe wanted to upgrade the position at the turn of the year and ended up landing Dan Burn after missing out on the likes of Carlos and Netherlands star Sven Botman.

But the signing of Burn will not stop Howe adding another centre-back at the end of the campaign. And while AC Milan-bound Botman looks off Newcastle’s radar, Carlos is still their number one target.

The arrival of Howe has sparked an incredible turnaround at St James’ Park. Indeed, the Magpies failed to win any of their opening 14 Premier League games and looked destined for the drop.

Since then Howe has won 11 and lost eight of his 24 games in charge of the club. That form has seen Newcastle move well clear of relegation concerns.

Now the emphasis has moved on to making the first-team stronger, with several targets in mind.
