Newcastle owners have chance to buck Premier League trend by backing Eddie Howe

Home-grown football managers rarely get a chance to impress in the modern game.

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, an alarming stat is that no coach born in England has ever won the country’s elite football competition.

Despite producing some of the finest players, developing a star-studded domestic league that is the envy of the world and being a football-obsessed nation, our lack of world-class managers is an embarrassing elephant in the room.

The top six clubs in England have had 22 managers between them during the last decade. Of the 22, just three - or 14% - were English.

Why is this the case?

Football facilities in England are arguably the best in the world yet, for some reason, our managers are either not good enough, or simply not given the chance…

That is why Newcastle have a chance to break the mould by backing Eddie Howe.

A forward-thinking, modern-day coach, Howe adopts a more continental approach than a traditional English manager.

The 44-year-old’s passion lies on the training ground, conducting his sessions rather than delegating them out to an assistant.

A fresh-faced Howe was thrust into management at the tender age of 31, taking charge of cash-strapped Bournemouth and keeping them in League Two despite a 17-point deduction.

An exemplary building job saw the Cherries climb through the divisions on their way to the Premier League while playing an inventive brand of football that is abnormal for the lower leagues.

Newcastle owners are asking Howe to do a similar job - albeit in different circumstances - as the club strives to become a major force in English football.
