Newcastle now in talks to sign 'special' talent in record move; he's scored 26 goals this season

Newcastle United are reportedly now in talks to sign Darwin Nunez in the summer.

Nunez is certainly having a standout season at Benfica, where he has managed to score no fewer than 26 goals in total over all competitions so far, including a remarkable record of 20 strikes in 22 games in the league.

He has helped his team to third place in the Portuguese top flight, and of course reached the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League, where Liverpool will be next to find out what he is made of.

As per 90min, the St. James’ Park faithful are one of a number of clubs who are already in talks with Nunez’s representatives over a potential move, along with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Manchester United.

He has told Benfica that he wants to leave, and sources have revealed that he has a ‘real desire’ to play in the Premier League.

However, he is thought to cost around £65m, which would smash the North East club’s transfer record.

Nunez could well be the striker to take the Tyneside outfit to the next level, and so paying the £65m would be worth it in the long-term.

Dubbed a ‘special’ player with ‘no ceiling’ by Almeria sporting director Joao Goncalves (BBC), the Uruguay international is not a one-season wonder, as he managed double figures in terms of goals and assists last term, while at his previous club Almeria, he netted 16 times in his only campaign there (Transfermarkt).

At just 22 years of age, Nunez has the potential to become one of the world’s best, and with the high level of competition for his signature, the Magpies need to make sure that they get this deal done.
