Newcastle injury news: 'Eddie Howe facing huge blow' over Kieran Trippier

A long-term injury to Kieran Trippier would come as a ‘big blow’ in Newcastle United’s push for Premier League survival, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Trippier found the back of the net as the Magpies secured a 3-1 victory over fellow strugglers Everton at St James’ Park last night, but he was then forced off the pitch in the final moments of the encounter.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has confirmed Trippier asked to be substituted in the final moments of the win over Everton after sustaining a calf problem.

Howe, during his post-match press conference, was unable to give any indication of how long the right-back could be on the sidelines for but admitted ‘it would be devastating’ to be without Trippier for an extended period.

Trippier headed onto social media to thank Newcastle fans for their support after the triumph but did not allude to the severity of the injury which resulted in him being unable to continue.

The 35-cap England international has made an impact since heading to Tyneside in a £12million deal from reigning La Liga champions Atletico Madrid last month.

Having come into a team bereft of confidence and with a solitary win all season, Trippier has only tasted defeat once in his new surroundings and that came in the FA Cup third round shock at the hands of Cambridge United.

O’Rourke feels Trippier’s influence on Newcastle’s squad has been clear and the 31-year-old is an upgrade on Howe’s previous right-back options.

As a result, the journalist understands why the Magpies will be desperate for the January signing’s injury to be minor.
