Newcastle United stepped up their preparations for the new season with a 3-0 victory against 1860 Munich at the picturesque SaalfeldenArena Burgerau,
Following a stop-start first half, Joe Willock opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 55th minute with a well-taken finish inside the box. Substitute Sean Longstaff doubled the Magpies' advantage just a few minutes later with a powerful effort before Bruno Guimaraes then added a third from close range in the 76th minute to ultimately make it a comfortable afternoon for Eddie Howe's side.
Here are five things we learned from the first of two games Newcastle will play during their training camp in Austria.
It is never wise to take too much notice of pre-season results. Newcastle, after all, came up against a third-division 1860 Munich side who were hammered 6-0 by Borussia Monchengladbach just a few days before this game.
However, this was still a useful exercise as Newcastle were tasked with breaking down a dogged 1860 Munich outfit who slowed the game down. That has not traditionally been Newcastle's strength - the Magpies have worked a lot under Howe on being better in possession after making real strides off the ball - and the fatigued black-and-whites did not even test goalkeeper Marco Hiller in the first half.
The players' frustration was evident as they repeatedly went long during a stop-start first half. Jamaal Lascelles, meanwhile, picked up a yellow card before the half-hour mark and Jacob Murphy and Callum Wilson both took issue with some committed challenges from 1860 Munich players.
The standards are so high now at Newcastle that, even in a pre-season friendly, Howe will not have been happy with that first-half display - and you can be sure the players knew
