Newcastle: Fresh update on Magpies' pursuit of £67m star

Sevilla defender Diego Carlos has gone down on Newcastle United‘s priority list, says transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 29-year-old was a target for the Tyneside club in January, but it appears that he is no longer a player Eddie Howe is desperate to sign.

Last month, GOAL reported that Sevilla had raised Carlos’ release clause to £67m ahead of the summer transfer window.

It is significantly more than the £37.7m fee they were looking for a few months ago, with Sky Sports reporting at the time that Newcastle were unwillingly to meet that price.

After failing to sign the Brazilian, the Magpies turned to Dan Burn, bringing in the 29-year-old from Brighton after they struck a £13m deal with their Premier League rivals.

With Sevilla now likely to demand £67m for Carlos having increased his release clause to that number, it will be interesting to see whether Newcastle go back in for him.

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that there is not as much of an urgency to bring Carlos in as there was in January.

Speaking to GMS about Newcastle’s interest in the Sevilla man, the football journalist said: “I don’t think Diego Carlos, from checking it out, is as much of a priority as he has been.”

Not necessarily. While £67m is a lot of money, it is a fee Newcastle can easily afford to pay following a takeover that has now made them the richest club in the world.

However, given that the Magpies were unwilling to pay just under £40m for his services in January, it would not be a complete shock if they decided to walk away, while Jones’ information suggests he is no longer a priority for them.
