Newcastle 'could end up paying £67m' for long-term transfer target
Newcastle United could still trigger Diego Carlos‘ release clause despite Sevilla recently increasing it, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.
The 29-year-old’s release clause now stands at a whopping £67m, but Jones does not think that will necessarily put the Tyneside club off this summer.
GOAL reported earlier this month that Sevilla increased Carlos’ release clause to £67m in a bid to ward off Newcastle.
The Magpies were interested in signing the central defender in January, with Sky Sports claiming that his current club were looking for a fee closer to £40m at the time.
In the end, though, nothing happened and it now looks like Newcastle will have to pay a much larger fee than the above if they still want to sign Carlos.
The 6 ft 1 Brazilian has been a key player at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium this season, making 36 appearances in all competitions, so Sevilla’s latest move is not surprising.

Despite Sevilla increasing Carlos’ release clause, Jones believes Newcastle could still make a fresh move for the centre-half and thinks the Spanish outfit are well aware of that possibility.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the football journalist said: “By increasing his release clause, they know there’s a possibility of that being triggered, too. I think that it’s still reasonable that Newcastle could end up paying it.”
If they think the former Nantes man is genuinely going to improve their side by a large margin, then why not? They obviously now have the finances to do such deals, while manager Eddie Howe must clearly be a fan after going after him in January.
