Newcastle 3-1 Everton: Amanda Staveley part of the most awkward handshake ever at FT

For the first time in the 2021/22 Premier League season, Newcastle United have won back-to-back games.

Eddie Howe’s side beat Leeds United 1-0 away from home before the winter break and followed that up with a potentially campaign-defining 3-1 victory over Everton on Tuesday evening.

Frank Lampard’s side actually took the lead on the night thanks to a first half own-goal from Jamaal Lascelles, but the Toffees weren’t in front for long.

The scores were levelled at 1-1 just before the break courtesy of the game’s second own-goal from Mason Holgate.

Newcastle then took the match by the scruff of the neck in the second half. Ryan Fraser scored his first Premier League goal for the club to make it 2-1 and then January signing Kieran Trippier put the game to bed with a trademark free-kick.

It felt like a night where the Magpies’ season finally got going after months and months of disappointment.

Newcastle’s hierarchy were evidently ecstatic with the result at full-time, including co-owner Amanda Staveley, who played a major role in the Saudi consortium’s takeover.

But while she’ll be happy with the final score, the businesswoman will not be pleased to learn that footage of her incredibly awkward failed handshake in the stands has now gone viral on social media.

Staveley went to formally celebrate the team’s efforts with a person near to her and instead of a simple handshake, it turned into an accidental game of rock paper scissors.

That would be painful to watch if it wasn’t so funny as well.

We’ve all been there when you’ve gone in for a handshake and the other person has held out a clenched hand for a fist bump instead. Thankfully, our failed attempts haven’t been broadcast on television worldwide.
