New Rangers signing reveals dad's inspiration from Abbey Villa days
It was always written in the stars that Mason Munn would become a goalkeeper. It was a fate handed down by his father.
Jon Munn is a bit of a legend around Abbey Villa. He played for and captained the Amateur League side before going on to become a successful coach.
One of his students was his son, Mason. The now 16-year-old started off his goalkeeping career at Villa, and the rest, as they say, is history.
A successful spell at Glentoran Academy has now paved the way to a massive move to Glasgow Rangers. Mason has joined the Ibrox club's academy and is set to feature for the Under 18s next season.
It is a huge move for the talented teen, who has already been capped at underage level for Northern Ireland. He had been on the radar of several clubs across the water including a number of English Premier League sides.
But now Mason is preparing for the latest chapter of his burgeoning career in Scotland.
The shot-stopper has previously spoken of starting his career at Abbey Villa, and growing up with a pair of gloves on his hands due to his father's influence.
Speaking in a YouTube interview with ULNK back in May, Mason explained how his goalkeeping career came about. He said: "I started my career when I was six with Abbey Villa, my home club in Millisle.
"I spent six or seven seasons there and didn't know what the future held. My dad was a goalkeeper and I always wanted to be one, so I started off at Abbey Villa.
"My dad was always a keeper and from the start I had the gloves on, so I wanted to be that and I went on to enjoy being a goalkeeper. It helped a lot because when you're younger, especially at Abbey Villa, you wouldn't have that specialist coaching in goalkeeping.
