New Middlesbrough coach Alan Fettis helped save Victor Valdes career

Former Boro shot-stopper Victor Valdes has revealed Alan Fettis helped save his career after a fallout with ex-Red Devils boss Louis can Gaal. The goalkeeper coach is set to join Chris Wilder's backroom staff after agreeing a deal to leave Old Trafford earlier this summer.

Fettis will take up a key role in Wilder's coaching make-up after the departure of Ian Bennett at the end of last season. The former Man United coach has been at the club over a decade after being appointed by Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2011.

During that time, he's tutored the likes of David De Gea, Sam Johnstone, Edwin Van der Saar and former Boro keeper Valdes. It was during that stint at Old Trafford that Valdes credits the Northern Ireland international for saving his football career.

The Champions League winner had been banished to the Under-23's squad after a fall out with Van Gaal back in 2015. Valdes told Sky Sports: ""I want to say in a public way thank you to the U21 coach Alan Fettis.

"Without him I may have given up football. He made me keep going and stopped me when I was thinking about bringing my career to an end."
