New horror The Outwaters is so ‘disturbing’ it’s triggering Apple Watch ‘heart rate’ alerts

A new horror film is heading to cinemas that viewers have said is so “disturbing” it has triggered their Apple Watch “heart rate” alerts. The Outwaters has terrified audiences in the US since it dropped in February, and horror fans in the UK will soon be able to endure it for themselves.

That’s because writer and director Robbie Banfitch has confirmed it will hit UK cinemas on April 7. The low-budget horror is filmed in the found-footage style made famous by 1999 mockumentary The Blair Witch Project, and follows four friends who encounter “menacing phenomena” while filming a music video in California’s remote Mojave Desert.

Its synopsis explains: “Their trip starts off like any other, but the group soon realises something is not right. Mysterious sounds haunt them, and when a menacing force descends, their horrifying journey into soul-shattering darkness begins.”

The Outwaters has so far proved divisive amongst general audiences, currently holding a 52 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. But critics have been more generous, helping the film achieve a 72 percent score based on 58 reviews.

Horror publication Bloody Disgusting described the film as a “mind-bending trip through terror” that is “disorienting and absolutely frightening.” It has also left a strong impression on viewers across the pond, with some saying they were so disturbed it triggered “high heart rate” alerts on their Apple Watch.
