New Cork City owner Dermot Usher ready for 'amazing journey'

Kildare-based businessman Dermot Usher has officially taken control of Cork City.

In early December, members of supporters trust FORAS [Friends of the Rebel Army Society] voted in favour of a takeover by Usher, with a total of 86% of voters agreeing to the motion at a Special General Meeting.

Usher led the Irish bathroom brand SONAS Bathrooms, originally founded by his father John, over a 30-year period as a family business. He has previously attempted to be part of takeovers at Dundalk and Bray Wanderers.

The Leesiders won the First Division title in 2022 and will mark their return to the top flight with a clash against Bohemians at Turner's Cross on Friday 17 February [live on RTÉ2].

On Friday evening, Cork City released a statement from Usher, in which he reiterated his desire to grow the club on and off the pitch.

"As of today, Friday the 3rd of February, I am delighted to confirm that I have successfully purchased Cork City FC," said Usher.

"This is the start of an amazing journey to build on the success of FORAS who have entrusted me to take the club to the next level.

"I have been working hard behind the scenes to make match days a more enjoyable experience. 2023 is a start but be assured I will endeavour to provide the best experience and facilities we can.

"All I want to do at all times is the right thing for Cork City FC. I am really looking forward to the year ahead and what we will learn as a team in order to develop as a club. I ask all supporters to come on this journey with us and let's see what we can achieve."
