Netflix announces new series of popular German show as fans brand it 'must watch'

Netflix has announced that a popular German drama will be returning for its third and final series.

The Empress is a German historical drama based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The first series launched on Netflix in September 2022 and was the most-watched series worldwide for more than two weeks.

In the first series of the hit German show, rebellious Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) falls for Emperor Franz (Philip Froissant) and becomes his unlikely bride, entering a world of tension and intrigue at the Viennese court.

The second series premiered on Netflix in November last year, and now the streaming giant has announced that the popular period drama will be returning for another series.

Netflix wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "The Empress will return for a third and final season!"

Fans have flooded the comments with messages of excitement for the return of their favourite show. @ImHeika wrote on X: "I love this one. Can’t wait", and @NetflixTerminal added: "Unbelievable, another season, this is a banger".
