Neil Warnock reveals Chris Kamara offer as he reminisces on managing Sheffield United

Former Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock has revealed how he offered Chris Kamara the chance to become his assistant manager in 2001. Warnock was on the lookout to add to his backroom team alongside Kevin Blackwell and made an attempt to bring Kamara to Bramall Lane.

Kamara was working for Sky Sports at the time of the approach and after much deliberation, opted against accepting the job. Warnock, who was a Blades fan growing up as a kid, spent eight years in the dugout at Sheffield United, the longest of any club during his management career.

His penultimate season in charge led to United achieving promotion to the Premier League. Speaking on the Proper Football Podcast, Warnock opened up on why he approached Kamara to join him at Sheffield United, while also reminiscing on the pride he felt managing his boyhood club.

He said: “Serves you right then, could’ve been a millionaire now you... but you need a couple of good right hands and I only had one at the time. I just liked Kammy, he was always straight with me, tell me how it is. You need people who aren’t yes men.

“I’ve always thought when I’ve talked to him he knows football as well. I had Ronnie Jepson for a few years, he’s never been a great footballer, knocked a few goals on but great around the place and knows the game as well.

“It was just great to be managing my own club because my Dad used to do 6-2 shifts at British Steel and then on Saturday he used to get home, run to the house at about 2.10. I’d never seen anyone change so quick, I’d be ready waiting and we used to run down to the intake terminus and get on a bus at about half past.
