Narrow defeat for Derry in Europa League Conference League third round first leg in Kazakhstan

Derry City were left to rue a missed opportunity by Michael Duffy as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Tobol Kastanay in the Europa Conference League third round qualifying first leg in Kazakhstan.

Roman Asrankulov's goal proved the difference as the left-back's accurate drive from the corner of the penalty box went in off the underside of the crossbar in the 65th minute.

Tobal goalkeeper Ivan Konovalov's poor kickout 12 minutes from full-time allowed Duffy a glorious chance chance nine yards from goal but he smashed the ball just wide in Derry's best opening of the game.

The tie is still wide open ahead of the second leg in Tallaght Stadium next Thursday.
