Murder investigation launched after elderly man dies 'from street attack' as teenager arrested

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of an elderly man who was found with serious injuries in Leigh. Officers were called to Royal Drive on Friday (June 28) evening.

GMP said officers did not think the man's injuries were suspicious at first and he was taken to hospital for further treatment. However, over the last few days his condition worsened and he passed away on Wednesday morning (July 3).

Police say that subsequent enquiries revealed he was suspected to have suffered his injuries after being attacked in the street, with a murder investigation launched. Specialist detectives from the Major Incident Team have since arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

The 18-year-old remains in police custody for questioning. Due to concerns around the initial response to the report on Friday 28 June, GMP said it's Professional Standards Directorate is conducting further enquiries into its response.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Naismith, from the Major Incident Team, said: “Firstly my thoughts, and the thoughts of the investigation team, are with our victim’s family at this devastating time.

“There are a number of enquiries being conducted to establish the events that occurred in the lead up to this tragic incident, but the arrest this evening is an important step in our investigation and providing justice for our victim’s family and friends.

“I’m sure that news of this nature will also be concerning for our communities. We have deployed additional officers to the area whilst we conduct further enquiries, if you have any questions, or something you would like to share with us, please do not
