MP raises Caroline Gore tragedy in Parliament as hundreds back M.E.N. campaign

An MP has raised the tragic death of Caroline Gore in Parliament, amid a Manchester Evening News campaign to strengthen the law in her memory. The 44-year-old cleaner, from Wigan, was brutally murdered by an abuser who had a restraining order that should have stopped him from contacting her.

David Liptrot, 57, of Shelley Close, Coppull, repeatedly flouted the order before he eventually fatally stabbed her on October 29 last year, as she returned home from the pub. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murdering the mum and grandmother-of-two - in a callous act he shouldn't have been able to commit.

The M.E.N. is calling on the government to introduce a mandatory minimum prison term for breaches of protective orders, like the one Liptrot flouted with devastating consequences. In the House of Commons yesterday (November 14), Leigh and Atherton MP Jo Platt raised Caroline's story.

She asked the Leader of the House, Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell, whether the Labour government would welcome a minimum jail term for breaches of a restraining order. Ms Platt said: "Caroline Gore, a 44-year-old mother, was tragically killed by her abuser less than four weeks after he avoided jail for breaching a restraining order.

"Although I welcome this Government’s commitment to halving violence against women and girls, does the Leader of the House agree that a minimum jail term for breaches would help protect women? Would she welcome a debate on strengthening the law?"

Ms Powell replied: "I am really sorry to hear of the case that my Hon. Friend raises. In doing so, she reminds us once again that we have to reduce violence against women and girls as a priority.
