Morrisons rename Victoria sponge and launch adorable corgi cake for Queen's Jubilee

Move aside caterpillar cakes, Morrisons have just smashed all other supermarkets out of the park with a novelty celebration cake fit for a Queen - or a Jubilee, at least.

Morris the Caterpillar cake has a new friend called Clarence in the form of a royal-themed dessert set out to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign. It’s a well known fact that The Queen loves her dogs - particularly corgis - and this adorable Clarence the Corgi cake will be released just in time for the Jubilee bank holiday weekend.

The chocolate Swiss roll cake comes with red, white and blue sprinkles, an edible corgi face topped with a Union Jack flag crown. Priced at £6, the adorable celebration cake serves 12 people and will be available in Morrisons stores from May 21.

The supermarket launched a social media competition to name the corgi, and Clarence topped the list of names, beating Clara, Candy, Juby Lee and Corey. And when Aldi 'clocked off' for the bank holiday weekend, Morrisons offered to help with social media duties so long as Clarence could keep the budget supermarket's Cuthbert the Caterpillar company.

But it’s not the only cake that Morrisons have launched in honour of Her Majesty’s celebrations. The retailer has reinvented the iconic Victoria Sponge - said to be a royal favourite - renaming it the Elizabeth Sponge cake.

Morrison’s latest creation follows a royal recipe shared by The Duchess of Cornwall which involves jam and cream spread on sponges and topped with berries. The cakes are made of three layers of sponge cake with strawberry jam and whipped cream, topped with an arrangement of fresh strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar.
