Montpellier striker Akor Adams eyes Super Eagles call-up despite fierce competition

Montpellier striker Akor Adams remains optimistic about his prospects of earning a spot in Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad, despite the fierce competition among the team’s forwards.

Adams gained attention this year after moving from Norwegian club Lillestrom in a deal worth €4.5 million. The 24-year-old started his Ligue 1 season impressively, scoring seven goals in his first ten matches.

However, his goal-scoring form has tapered off, with no goals in Ligue 1 since November 2023. Despite this, he continues to get playing time at Montpellier.

In the Super Eagles, the forward line is stacked with top talents like Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Terem Moffi. Additionally, there are other skilled strikers like Cyriel Dessers, Sadiq Umar, Gift Orban, and Paul Onuachu vying for spots in the national team. This depth of attacking talent makes it challenging for new players to break into the squad.

However, Adams is confident that he can eventually earn his place among the Super Eagles. In an interview with Oluwashina Okeleji, Adams expressed his belief in his future with the national team, emphasising the privilege of being among so many talented Nigerian strikers and expressing his eagerness to seize the opportunity when it comes.

“We all have our place and we are privileged to have so many good strikers and so many good players,” Adams said. “So, when the time comes, I’ll take the opportunity. It’s a dream for every Nigerian kid, which I am one of.”
