Monster traffic jam? FNB Stadium said to be ready to host Soweto derby semi, PSL yet to confirm

Stadium Management SA (SMSA) has confirmed that FNB Stadium will be ready in time for the Nedbank Cup semi-final, a Soweto derby clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, despite Monster Jam taking place at the venue the weekend before.

Amakhosi and the Buccaneers, two iconic footballing teams, were pitted against each other in Sunday's semi-final draw.

As Soweto derbies go, it is expected to be a sold-out fixture, with Chiefs drawn ahead of Pirates to have the right to host the match at their famous Soccer City home venue.

The match is scheduled for the weekend of 6-7 May, with the kick-off time, date and venue to be confirmed by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in the coming weeks.

A possible spanner is in the works, however, with Monster Jam occurring on Saturday, 29 April, a week before the iconic rivals are set to clash.

The Monster Jam event will set a stage with manufactured sand ramps, including built-in steel ramps, across the pitch for their monster truck driving and racing, freestyle competitions and motocross action, including jaw-dropping stunts.

Johannesburg is the second stop in the event's three-city tour, which starts at Cape Town Stadium on 22 April and ends at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium on 6 May.

Two days after the Monster Jam at FNB Stadium, Amakhosi have a DStv Premiership home fixture against Swallows (2 May). According to the schedule, Arthur Zwane's charges will play that match in Limpopo at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Chiefs usually use Durban's Moses Mabhida venue for their "home-away-from-home" matches, but that arena is out of bounds as preparations for its leg of Monster Jam will be under way at that time.

SMSA manages the FNB Stadium, Orlando Stadium, Dobsonville Stadium and Rand Stadium.
