Money mistake may leave you unable to pay on holiday, experts say

Holidaymakers are being urged to do their homework on using digital payments in Europe this summer to avoid being left unable to pay. The UK is widely seen as one of the most advanced nations when it comes to using bank cards or mobile payments for goods and services and many citizens don’t carry cash anymore.

But Brits heading to the continent this summer are being urged to plan ahead as using digital payments in some popular destinations is not quite as common. Saurabh Chawande of leading payment solutions experts myPOS said: “Many of us use our cards and our mobiles as an integral part of everyday life, paying for everything from a pint of milk at the supermarket to booking a summer holiday.

“In the UK, it’s somewhat uncommon to find a restaurant or shop that doesn’t accept digital payments, but it’s not quite as straightforward in Europe. In some European countries, such as Austria, Germany and France, digital payments aren’t quite as widely used as they are in the UK, and you may find some businesses don’t accept them.

“Therefore, it’s highly recommended that we plan ahead to avoid disappointment, and we research our holiday destination and how widespread the use of digital payments is. If you’re visiting a restaurant or a retail outlet, be sure to ask staff if they accept cards before you purchase anything, especially if you are not carrying cash with you.

“While digital payments have made everyday transactions significantly more convenient, it is important not to assume it is available in every instance when travelling abroad.”
