Molly McCann: Remembering Meatball's sensational comeback win over Ji Yeon Kim

Molly McCann is poised to make history on Saturday night as she enters the Octagon as the first ever woman to feature on the main card of a UFC London event.

Meatball will share the milestone moment with opponent Luana Caroline, a Brazilian fighter with an 8-2-0 record.

The two will take to the stage this evening at UFC Fight Night 204 — Caroline will be coming off the back of two wins, while McCann will be riding the momentum of her iconic victory against Ji Yeon Kim last time out.

Meatball Molly’s last fight was everything she needed to seize her career by the scruff of the neck and take control. With her contract expiring after the Las Vegas bout, the Scouser was fighting for more than her next win — she was fighting for her UFC career.

McCann had suffered back-to-back losses against Taila Santos and Lara Procópio and was hampered with injuries in the lead up to her fight with Kim.

A dislocated shoulder, a broken knuckle, and two grade two ligament tears in her knee were some of the major physical issues McCann suffered during the build up to the bout. It cast heavy doubt on her ability to compete in Sin City but Meatball was not prepared to pull out of the make or break fight.

“I haven’t had a fight camp like that for a very long time and it prepped the mind for war,” McCann said.

The Liverpudlian started the match in her usual aggressive style, getting stuck straight in with a high tempo. A clash of the heads broke Meatball’s momentum and she had to work her way back onto her feet, but her stream of pressure was halted only momentarily.

McCann’s relentless energy kept Kim on her toes for the full three rounds and the Scouser rounded it off with a crescendo of blows on the South Korean.

An emotional Meatball
