Mohamed Tolu wins third Saudi medal after shot put silver at Asian Games

LONDON: Saudi shot-putter Mohamed Tolu won the Kingdom’s third medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday after winning the silver medal in the shot put competition.

There was further athletics success for Saudi Arabia after Abdullah Abkar qualified for the final of the 200 meters race by winning his semifinal with a time of 20.59.

In the 3000-meter steeplechase final, runner Badr Al-Omrani finished eighth with a time of 8:49.19 and his teammate Wasim Al-Farsi finished twelfth with a time of 9:09.27.

Elsewhere, in the 1500 meter final, Faez Al-Subayi finished seventh with a time of 3:42.14 and his teammate Raed Al-Jadaani finished eighth with a time of 3:42.52 minutes.

Abdulrahman Al-Mousa, Mansour Alawi, Abdulaziz Al-Rawdha and Bilal Al-Awadhi qualified for the round of 32 in the men’s archery competition. In the women’s competition, Shaden Al-Marshod  and Sara bin Salum qualified for the round of 32.

Also on Sunday, the Saudi footballers were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage of the football competition after losing to Uzbekistan 2-1.

Uzbekistan opened the scoring with an early goal in the second minute followed by a second in the 24th minute.

In the second half Mohammed Maran grabbed a goal for the young Green Falcons in the 65th minute, but it wasn’t enough to get back on level terms.

Saudi Kurash player Wedian Al-Muwallad was knocked out of Kurash competition in her first international appearance after losing to her Uzbek opponent in the quarterfinal.

Saudi Seraj Al-Sulaim is also heading home from the Games early after only managing to secure an eighth place in the 61kg weight category with a total lift of 286kg.
