Minister queries NFF, demands technical report over Super Eagles’ poor results

Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, yesterday, demanded a detailed technical report from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the country’s disappointing performance at the ongoing 2026 World Cup African qualifying series.

The Super Eagles are fifth in a six-team group that also comprises Lesotho, Rwanda, Benin Republic, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Yesterday in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, the Super Eagles sank to an all-time low following a 2-1 defeat by the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, who hosted Nigeria away from their home as the country could not provide a FIFA-acceptable arena for the game.

This defeat came after Nigeria had managed three 1-1 draws in their opening games against Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa

These results leave the Super Eagles with a total of just three points from a possible 12 from the four games played thus far in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Reacting to yesterday’s defeat on a neutral ground, Enoh expressed his dissatisfaction with the outcomes, especially considering the substantial support the NFF has received from President Bola Tinubu’s administration, in addition to “the open and positive working relationship between the Ministry and the NFF.”

A statement signed by his Special Assistant, Media, Diana-Mary Nsan, the minister said: “The recent results are unacceptable. Despite the immense support from President Tinubu and the high expectations of Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have underperformed.
