Midweek mayhem: Mmodi, Saile magic assures Chiefs victory, Komphela's Swallows sting CT Spurs

A stunning long-range strike from Pule Mmodi and a coolly taken header from super-sub Christian Saile earned Kaizer Chiefs a 2-0 victory over 10-man Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.

Molefi Ntseki and his determined Amakhosi squad secured their second consecutive triumph, propelling them to fifth spot in the DStv Premiership with seven points.

On the flip side, Stellies endured a disappointing back-to-back loss, causing them to descend to the 11th spot on the log - an outcome far from their aspirations.

Stellenbosch needed to show some urgency after their disappointing defeat against SuperSport United at their usual home base, Danie Craven Stadium, over the weekend, but Chiefs who come off a healthy 3-0 win over AmaZulu, started with a heap of confidence and rightly so, putting a string of great passes to unlock Stellies defence at a nippy Athlone Stadium.

From an early corner kick, Stellies' defence were caught lead-footed as an orchestrated Chiefs training ground move nearly locked in the opening goal. A row of four Amakhosi jerseys lined up, confusing Stellies defence, which allowed Given Msimango to drop into a gap unmarked as the ball curled into his path. The former TS Galaxy defender, however, did not time his header to perfection.

Stellies eventually grew into the game, particularly through their wingbacks, Fawaaz Basadien and Dean van Rooyen, whose pace and technique stretched Chiefs. Elsewhere, lanky New Zealand-born forward Andre de Jong, flanked by Iqraam Rayners and Devin Titus, also gave the visitors problems.
