Midfielder Michael Phillips leaves Maidstone United

Michael Phillips has announced his departure from Maidstone United.

Phillips says the decision was the “hardest I’ve made”, having enjoyed the “best year in my footballing career”.

The midfielder, who rejoined United from Wealdstone last summer, has been linked with Barnet in recent weeks.

The Bees are managed by Dean Brennan, the man who took Phillips to Wealdstone three years ago.

Phillips had to bide his time after returning to the Gallagher.

He finally made his first start at Hungerford at the end of October and went on to play a key role as Hakan Hayrettin’s side won the National South title.

Hayrettin had been looking to keep Phillips but the former Crystal Palace man has decided to move on.

Announcing his exit, Phillips said: “Returning to this football club after being relegated from the National League was a pleasure, knowing I had unfinished business to get this club back to the National League where they belong.

“I would like to thank Hakz, the backroom staff and the chairmen (co-owners Terry Casey and Oliver Ash).

“A big shout-out to my team-mates who I have now made friends for life with.

“I have enjoyed my football on and off the pitch with these boys. Thank you for allowing me to have the best year in my footballing career.

“Lastly, I want to thank all the Maidstone fans for welcoming me back to the Gall and supporting me throughout the whole season, and this won’t be the last time you see me.

“This was the hardest decision I’ve made but I wish you all the best. Once a Stone, always a Stone.”
