Midfielder James Milner agrees a one-year deal to stay at Liverpool

James Milner has reportedly agreed a one-year contract extension at Liverpool, bringing his stay at Anfield up to eight years by the end of 2023.

In remaining at the Merseyside club until the end of 2022-2023, Milner will also reach two decades of football in the English top flight, having made his Premier League debut for Leeds, aged 16 and 309 days.

The Athletic reports that the former England international has taken a large pay cut and rejected deals from other Premier League sides, as well as a potentially lucrative move to the MLS. 

It is thought that the agreement was finalised within the last 48 hours, and an official statement is expected to be made in the next week. 

However Milner has supposedly taken a significant drop in wages to remain at Anfield, and the deals that he is thought to have rejected offered the player two years, rather than the one he has signed on for at Liverpool.

Milner has already spent a hugely impressive 19 years and seven months in England's top flight, having debuted for Leeds against future club Newcastle in 2002. 

Although the midfielder could have left on a free transfer once his contract expired in June, Jurgen Klopp is reported to have ensured him he will be integral to the Reds' continued success.

And Milner is hardly a bench-warmer for the Champions League finalists either; last season he featured in more than half of the 63 games Liverpool played, taking to the pitch 39 times. 

The former Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder has already notched 588 appearances in the league, putting him fourth on the all-time list.
