Mick Schumacher reflects on missed points opportunity after early Imola spin

Mick Schumacher was left to rue an early half spin at Imola on Sunday afternoon, with the Haas driver feeling as though he had a chance at a points-paying finish.

The German started in 10th place on the grid for Sunday’s race after a decent performance in Sprint but could not convert that into championship points come the chequered flag in the Grand Prix.

That said, his opportunity to do so was rather ruined before the race had even got going, with him sliding on the slippery surface at the first few corners to leave him dropping down the field.

Speaking to the gathered press, including Give Me Sport, after the Grand Prix at Imola, Schumacher reflected on the early incident:

“I think the start wasn’t great, which made things more difficult than necessary. It was quite tight going through turns two and three so it was never going to make things easy but unfortunately we had that half-spin which cost us a lot of positions.”

Schumacher was also asked whether he felt it was an opportunity missed in terms of recording points on Sunday, to which he responded:

“Definitely, we had the pace to be around P10 and see. If we would have been in the train [of cars] it would have been difficult to catch up [to P10] again and we might have stayed where we were and missed out on the points but nevertheless you never know what might have happened.”

A shame for Mick, then, but he can take heart from his display earlier on in the weekend he’ll look to build from that.
